ECU Calibration & Diagnostics Engineering Glossary
Clear, authoritative definitions of flash memory structures, bench protocols, checksums and Euro 6 state machines.
CVN (Calibration Verification Number)
A cryptographic 32-bit or 64-bit hash computed by the ECU over its calibration flash sectors and reported via OBD Mode $09 to dealer and inspection tools. DaVinci Ghost v1.0.41 includes automatic CHK/CVN recalculation.
Checksum (CRC Flash Block)
Mathematical integrity signatures stored across TriCore, Aurix, MPC5xx and Renesas flash sectors. Writing a modified file with an invalid checksum triggers an immediate ECU brick or P0601/P0605 internal memory fault.
TPROT (Tuning Protection)
RSA/SHA digital signature protection introduced by Bosch on MEDC17 and MD1/MG1 bootloaders to block unauthorized OBD writes unless unlocked via Bench Service Mode (GPT) or bootloader patch.
Bench Service Mode (GPT)
Non-invasive ECU reading/writing directly through the external multi-pin connector using power, CAN-H/CAN-L and GPT1/GPT2 crank/cam signal emulation - without prying open the aluminum ECU housing.
BSL (Bootstrap Loader / Boot Mode)
Low-level microcontroller recovery mode (Infineon TriCore TC17xx or ST10/C167) accessed via a boot pin on the PCB, allowing full IntFlash + EEPROM backup even if OBD communication is interrupted.
IntFlash vs ExtFlash vs EEPROM
IntFlash holds program code and calibration maps inside the main MCU (2-8 MB); ExtFlash is an external Spansion/AMD flash chip on older EDC16/ME7 units; EEPROM stores VIN, immobilizer keys, injector IMA codes and learned AdBlue counters.
SCR Inducement Countdown
Regulatory Euro 6 state machine that displays 'No Engine Start in 1000 km / 650 miles' when NOx conversion, AdBlue pressure (P20E8) or urea quality (P207F) falls outside thresholds.
DPF Soot Mass vs Oil Ash Mass
Calculated soot load triggers active regeneration every 300-800 km, whereas non-combustible oil ash accumulates permanently over 180,000+ km (P242F). Resetting ash counters on Diagnostics before flashing DPF Off is best practice.
EGR Hysteresis Map
Upper and lower injection-quantity vs RPM curves inside Bosch/Delphi/Continental ECUs that command desired air mass and EGR duty cycle. Zeroing hysteresis maps closes a healthy EGR valve cleanly without cutting sensor wires.
DTC Path / Class Table
Internal manufacturer structure linking raw hardware/plausibility fault indices to OBD P-codes, MIL lamp illumination masks and emergency torque-limitation classes.
OPF / GPF (Petrol Particulate Filter)
Ceramic exhaust particulate trap with differential-pressure monitoring fitted to Euro 6d direct-injection petrol engines controlled by Bosch MG1CS, MED17 and Continental Simos 18/19.
Virtual Read (VR)
Flasher workflow where the tool reads only the ECU software identification over OBD and downloads the matching factory original binary from the tool vendor's server for editing.
Master vs Slave Flasher
A Master programmer exports standard unencrypted .bin dumps compatible with DaVinci Ghost v1.0.41; a Slave programmer encrypts reads so only its linked Master serial can open them.
