EGR, DPF and AdBlue: what each emissions system does
Modern diesels use several systems to cut emissions, and each one shows up as a separate strategy in the ECU. Understanding what they do makes the switches in a tuning file much clearer.
EGR — exhaust gas recirculation
EGR routes a portion of the exhaust back into the intake to lower combustion temperature and reduce NOx. It is one of the oldest emissions strategies. See EGR off for how the software side is handled.
DPF — diesel particulate filter
The DPF traps soot and is cleaned by periodic regeneration managed by the ECU. On petrol engines the equivalent is the OPF/GPF. More detail in What is DPF off? and on the DPF off page.
AdBlue / SCR — selective catalytic reduction
SCR injects a urea solution (AdBlue) into the exhaust to convert NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. It relies on NOx sensors that the ECU monitors. See AdBlue / SCR off.
In an ECU file these appear as independent switches, and availability depends on the exact software. Open your file in DaVinci Ghost and the analysis lists which ones apply.
